Anger – Who does it really Hurt?

Anger is an emotion that needs to be expressed in a healthy way. When we are angry we can say things we do not mean, sometimes in an aggressive or intimidating way. Expressing anger in this way is pointless and people around you may be inclined not to respect you and to see you as a bully.

How do I deal with my anger in a healthy way?

When you are angry the most productive way to deal with it is to take a few breaths and try to relax. You may need to take a walk to calm down and release that pent up energy. When another person is involved in can help to gather your thoughts so you can calmly and rationally start a conversation to explain your point of view and discuss the situation in a more objective and constructive manor.

 

We all get angry but how we deal with it can affect our physical and emotional wellbeing.

Tips for Preventing Burnout

Set boundaries: Learning how to say ‘NO’ will allow you not to over extend yourself or take on additional tasks that may cause you stress. Remember it is important to say ‘NO’ so you can have time for yourself or the tasks you would prefer to be doing.

Try to start the day with a meditation or by taking a few minutes to clear your mind and just breathe.

Eat healthy, exercise regularly and get good nights sleep. This will help with your mental health in general enabling you to manage life’s daily challenges better.

Ban technology for at least an hour every day. Switch of your PC, Laptop, phones and communication devices. Allow yourself to disengage completely.  

Take up a hobby, something that you will enjoy and look forward to doing.

Why not try something you have always wanted to do but never gotten around too? Or return to that kickboxing class?

Connecting with nature and being creative can be very therapeutic. Allow yourself to be creative in any form that works for you. Painting, drawing, kitting, writing songs, poems etc..

Workplace Bullying!!

 

While standing in line at the supermarket earlier I witnessed a shop assistant being both physically and verbally assaulted by another member of staff. Naturally I was appalled and so sought out and made a complaint to the manager on duty but it got me thinking. How many of us have experienced or know of someone who has experienced workplace bullying?

There does not appear to be any up to date statistics on the subject in Ireland but in 2007 a report commissioned by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment found that out of 3,500 employees who responded to the survey 7.9% had experienced bullying in the previous six months, 10.7% of women and 5.8% of men where at risk, 60% of respondents considered quitting there jobs while 48% indicated that it had a negative effect on their life outside of work.

The past can affect us all in different ways as any significant experience can have a lasting effect on us. As children we are thought rules, thought how to behave as such we learn to see the world as it has been presented to us by those around us. Sometimes we can take on other people’s views as our own without ever stopping to question what we have been told. Unconsciously we develop defense mechanisms to protect ourselves from situations that cause us hurt, pain and anxiety. We may disassociate, become defensive and act out, rationalise or deny what is happening in order to survive. It is important however to remember that we can think for ourselves and decide what we believe to be true. Likewise we can change our behaviour in the present to move forward in a more healthy and productive way. Holding on to old defense mechanisms that no longer serves us can keep us stuck and work against us. As Maya Angelou once said, “when you know better, you do better” so it is important to take what you learn and make it work for you. Remember, don’t let the past determine your future follow your own path in life.

Make yourself a priority in 2014

Looking after yourself will help you to remain healthy and enjoy life more fully. Make 2014 your year!
